As a health-conscious parent of a 2-year-old as well as a former teacher who understands the wide variety of allergies that many children face on the daily, I have begun putting a much greater deal of thought into what types of “goodies” to share with our fellow trick-or-treaters. I want to ensure that what we are passing out is inclusive to kids with allergies. That it serves kids whose families seek to limit sugar. And that its both fun and festive for all kids who visit our door on Halloween night.
That said, while there are a large number of allergies that children may be living with on a daily basis, the following are some of the most common:
- Peanuts/Tree Nuts
- Wheat
- Lactose (dairy)
- Soy
- Egg
- Artificial food dye
When picking out your Halloween treats, whether candy or not, I would encourage you to be cognizant of these things when making your choice. Read your labels and check the product allergen information prior to purchasing. And know that in doing this you are not only supporting children with allergies, but all kids in having a safe and enjoyable Halloween.
