All Natural Remedies for Cold and Flu Season

October has come to a close and while the season of turkeys and holiday carols is drawing near, so too is another less festive one – cold and flu season.

A few weeks back I had the opportunity to attend a workshop on natural ways to prevent and relieve cold and flu symptoms with a few local experts in the field. I learned so many great tips and tricks, that I felt it only fitting to come back and share them with all of you. The following are a variety of highlights from the session as well as some things we intend to do and have on hand this season to help us combat the “bugs” ahead.

*Note: As I am not a medical professional, I would advise that you use this information as you see fit for your family, and always consult with your health team in regards to your specific situation. 

Preventative:

Ensure you are getting adequate sleep each night. A lack of sleep may make us more susceptible to infectious agents.

  • Avoid foods high in sugar and flour. These are inflammatory which can depress your immune system.
  • Get on a good daily probiotic. And rotate your probiotic every once in awhile to change up the bacteria strains.
  • Take a high quality fish and/or cod liver oil daily. Do your research on this one as you want to ensure it’s comprised of natural triglycerides, free of heavy metals, fresh, etc.
  • Take a daily vitamin D3 supplement. This is especially important for those of us who live up north and are getting outdoors less in the winter months.
  • Use astragalus root to build up your immune system defense for before and when the flu strikes. This one has a range of other benefits you can read more about here.
  • Have elderberry syrup on hand for the entire family. We take this nearly daily at the commence of cold and flu season. You can buy this one at the drug store – but it’s even better if you can find one made locally!
  • Gargle with warm salt water on the daily. This may prevent the spread of initial influenza infection from your throat/nasal cavity.
  • Snag some Influenzinum from a local homeopath This is a homeoprophylaxis option that involves taking this remedy prior to the start of flu season. If you know of a homeopath in your area and/or are currently working with one, this may be an option that you could certainly discuss with them.
Treatment Once Cold/Flu Strikes:
 
  • Continue and/or even up the ante on any of the above mentioned that you already have in place.
  • Cook up some homemade chicken stock or purchase a high quality bone broth. Load up on a minimum of three cups a day and sprinkle in a good amount of himalayan pink salt or gray sea salt for an added bonus!
  • Drink lots of fluids. This will help you pass toxins. Coconut oil is also a great addition to teas and warm beverages as it is naturally anti fungal and antibacterial.
  • Seek out acupuncture and/or chiropractic care at the first signs of illness as they may reduce the length and severity of symptoms.
  • Snag some Oscillococcinum (by Boiron), a homeopathic remedy that can be taken as soon as possible after flu symptoms appear to lessen the effects. It’s been said to work better the sooner you take it, so this is one that you may want to have on hand if you intend to use it!
  • Take an NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) supplement, which is a staple in our home, for it’s detoxifying effects and beyond. It can also be used to assist in thinning mucus!
  • Suck on a Thieves Cough Drop from Young Living. They contain all the power of essential oils without the added junk.
  • Soak yourself in a relaxing Epsom salt bath, which can help to sooth achy muscles, detoxify your body and help you get a good night’s sleep so that you can recover faster.
  • Use a neti pot to clear out your nasal passageway. Just be sure to use distilled or sterilized water!
  • Let a fever do its job. It is our body’s natural response to infection and our immune system doing what it was created to do.
I hope you found these tips to be as helpful as I did, and I’ll admit, I’m feeling much more prepared with my bag of tricks for this next cold & flu season ahead. If you have any remedies or tips you think I should add to the list, feel free to share them in the comments below.

  • And just like that, our babe is three. And while in the scheme of things, three years is a blink, it feels like our life before you was a lifetime ago sweet boy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We celebrated today with all of your favorite things- LEGO building, swimming, trucks, cake baking, sweet potatoes and sausages, Grandpa and a whole lot of frosting 🤪. Needless to say, while much more low key than birthdays’ past, I’d say today was just as special. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In honor of birthday número tres, Asher helped me whip up this Paleo Tres Leches cake from @sunkissedkitch. I’ll admit, I went the easy route on the frosting and just sprang for some @simplemills vanilla, because sometimes it’s nice to have ready-to-go and delicious at the same time. And it was clearly a hit, because this kid downed three pieces 🍰. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • Often times when I’m sharing a new veggie or one that Asher is still “learning”, I will pair it with something to dip it in. I don’t know about your kid, but mine loves to dunk (and occasionally bathe himself 😜) in nearly any sauce. And while yes, there are many times he just uses the vegetable as a spoon, he is at least bringing it to his lips and exploring it in his own way. Which is one step closer to taking a bite. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Today for snack I created a little dipping station for our cauliflower florets using the following:

4. Hummus ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5. @gothamgreens vegan pesto

Whipped up this little airplane themed snack during nap today in hopes of kicking off our afternoon packing marathon on a high note🤞🏻. I’ll admit, it’s not the most beautiful food-themed aircraft I’ve ever seen (not that I’ve seen many 🤷🏼‍♀️), but it’ll get the job done. It’s slim pickins’ around here grocery wise right now, so I got creative with what we had on hand. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Celery, @traderjoes raw almond butter and an apricot in front for the base. Cucumber and yellow carrots for the wings and tail. And @lovegrown Power O’s topped it off for the windows. And of course, no flight is complete without some banana and @kitehillfoods yogurt clouds. .

  • #ad Let's face it, the majority of the time that we take our children to the doctor's office, it isn't because everything is roses and we are just stopping in for a casual playdate. Aside from well-child visits, it's usually because we are headed there to evaluate a bump, bruise, rash, cut, scrape, cough, ache, pain, the list goes on. There are so many unknowns for us as parents as new things arise with our kids, but it's important for us to remember that most of these things are unknowns for our kids too. And not only that, but when you couple it with heading into a situation where they aren't sure exactly what to expect, it can be a bit anxiety inducing for many children.

That said, while we can't avoid all the germs and tumbles of childhood, we can do our best to prepare our children so that they feel safe and comfortable under a clinician's care when these things do arise. Today on the blog I am sharing in a variety of ways you can work to prepare your child for a positive experience at the doctor. Strategies, for instance, like using books and engaging in pretend play, ahead of time, are ones that have proven beneficial for Asher time and again before heading to not only his pediatrician, but dentist, chiro and beyond. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In addition, I am also sharing all of the deets on this new handheld exam kit called TytoHome we just got our hands on. Using this device and corresponding @tytocare app on your phone, one can actually perform guided medical exams with a clinician anytime, anywhere. Seriously all, we met with a practitioner from the comfort of our couch. Talk about making a "visit" to the doctor no big deal!
